Take the opportunity to learn from Alex in person at our new state-of-the-art conference facility. Alex will talk to us about taking on the challenge of literacy in schools – specifically reading and writing – and how we tackle some of the bigger issues around the skills and knowledge that children have always found more difficult. There will also be discussion around the impact of the pandemic, and how we might address those barriers that children and young people are facing in the classroom.

This session is suitable for:

  • Leaders of literacy in primary phase
  • Primary teachers
  • English subject leaders and leaders of whole-school literacy in secondary schools and post-16
  • Teachers at secondary phase and post-16

Additional Information:

Alex is a very highly regarded and influential speaker and writer about all things English and literacy. He is the National Content Manager for the Education Endowment Foundation. He co-authored the EEF’s ‘Metacognition and self-regulated learning’ and ‘Improving Literacy in Secondary Schools’ guidance reports.

Alex joined the EEF in 2018 after 15 years working as an English teacher. Alongside his teaching role, he was the Director of Huntington Research School, in York. He is the author of a number of books including ‘Closing the Vocabulary Gap’ and ‘The Confident Teacher’ and he regularly writes columns for TES and Teach Secondary magazines. Most recently, he has published ‘Closing the Writing Gap’.
